The Carabao Cup’s third round promises significant matchups for Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle, and Manchester City, as well as defending champion Manchester United.
Manchester United, which beat Newcastle United 2-0 at Wembley in February to win its first League Cup since 2017, once again was drawn against Premier League opposition in the third round: the Red Devils faced Aston Villa last year, as well as Everton in the F.A. Cup, on the way to both finals
Arsenal finds themselves pitted against Brentford in an eagerly awaited London derby. Meanwhile, Chelsea is set to challenge Brighton, a team that has faced player and coach departures, including the loss of their record signing Moises Caicedo.
A particularly enticing fixture in this round is Newcastle taking on Manchester City at St James’ Park, a match that could easily have been the tournament’s final.
City, who have been dominant in the Carabao Cup recently, winning five of the last seven finals, now face Newcastle, a team that made it to the final last season only to be defeated by Manchester United.
