Wildfires in Los Angeles concern many including the NFL
The city of Los Angeles is encircled by wildfires stretching from Malibu to Pasadena, affecting 70,000 homes. The NFL is closely monitoring the situation ahead of the Los Angeles Rams vs. Minnesota Vikings playoff game. The league issued a statement indicating that it will remain in contact with both teams in case any changes need to be made.
Where are the wildfires now?
Three major wildfires are currently burning in the Los Angeles area. The most significant is the Palisades Fire in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood, which has burned over 11,800 acres and forced the evacuation of approximately 37,000 people. The fire is still zero percent contained and has destroyed over 1,000 structures.
There are also two additional fires: the Eaton Fire near Pasadena and the Hurst Fire in Sylmar. Both fires are being fueled by strong Santa Ana winds, making firefighting efforts extremely challenging.

The Monday night game could be relocated
As of now, the Rams vs. Vikings playoff matchup is scheduled to take place at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood on Monday at 8 p.m. ET. However, there are concerns about the smoke from the fires and safety issues for fans attempting to get to the stadium.
The two best options should the game need to be moved are:
- Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas: This covered stadium is the closest NFL venue to Los Angeles and has no events scheduled until January 18.
- Levi’s Stadium, San Francisco: The home of the San Francisco 49ers, it’s another covered venue within California, though it’s about a six-hour drive from Los Angeles
SoFi Stadium is located in the Los Angeles suburb of Inglewood, which is approximately 15 miles from the epicenter of the fires. Due to winds reaching speeds of 60 to 80 miles per hour, fighting the fires is extremely challenging. Additionally, firefighters from other states are en route to Los Angeles, and SoFi Stadium may be needed as a safe zone for those battling the blazes.
Conclusion
Postponing the game is not an option, and while Los Angeles remains the main area of concern, if the fires continue to be a problem, then playing in either San Francisco or Las Vegas are the two most likely options.
