Growing up, I remember a series of poorly made Japanese films featuring Godzilla vs. Kong. These films were broadcast on Saturday nights on a local UHF channel, and despite their low quality, they were incredibly entertaining.
The subpar films pale in comparison to the incredible movie series produced by Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, namely GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE, now streaming on Max. The special effects surpass those of my younger years, yet they remain highly entertaining.
An American Sign Language (ASL) version of the film will also be available for streaming exclusively on Max on the same day. This ASL edition was created specifically for Max, featuring interpretation by ASL artist Otis Jones from Deaf West Theatre. Jones received coaching from Leila Hanaumi, acclaimed for her performance in last December’s Barbie with ASL, which was Max’s inaugural ASL film interpretation. “GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE” in ASL will appear as a distinct title within the Max app, easily recognizable by its key artwork showcasing the sign language symbol.
The movie is a thrilling, action-filled saga that traces Kong’s quest to locate his kin within an uncharted stratum of Hollow Earth. What he inadvertently discovers unleashes an unprecedented peril to humanity… a menace that only the united might of Kong and Godzilla, both having evolved in ways never seen before, can confront—and perhaps overcome.
GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE, directed by Adam Wingard, features a cast including Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens, Kaylee Hottle, Alex Ferns, and Fala Chen. The screenplay, written by Terry Rossio, Simon Barrett, and Jeremy Slater, is based on a story by Rossio, Wingard, and Barrett, and utilizes the character “Godzilla,” originally created by TOHO Co., Ltd. Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Eric McLeod, Thomas Tull, and Brian Rogers produced the film, with executive production by Wingard, Jen Conroy, Jay Ashenfelter, Yoshimitsu Banno, and Kenji Okuhira.
The film is an explosive, action-packed adventure that follows Kong’s journey to find his family through an undiscovered layer of Hollow Earth—and what he uncovers inadvertently brings forth the most dangerous threat to mankind yet… one that can only be countered (and possibly conquered) by the combined forces of Kong and Godzilla, now evolved like never before.
