2021 Kentucky Derby Winner Stripped

Mandaloun won the Kentucky Derby nearly a year after it was ran. Last year’s winner Medina Spirit was stripped of the title.

Though Medina Spirit galloped across the finnish line first, half a length ahead of Mandaloun, a subsequent test for betamethasone after the race led to a disqualification.

Betamethasone is legal in Kentucky but, is banned during the Kentucky Derby in the interests of tradition and competitiveness.

Trainer Bob Baffert received a two year suspension from Churchill Downs at the time of the infraction and a 90 day ban following the latest ruling.

It would have been Baffert’s 7th Kentucky Derby victory.
