A well-designed garden can transform the way you use and enjoy your outdoor space. Whether you want a complete garden makeover, improved planting, new paving, better lawn areas, or simply a more manageable garden, choosing the right professional can make a significant difference. However, with numerous gardening and landscaping services available, finding the best landscape gardener Southport for your needs requires some careful consideration.
The best professional will not simply make your garden look attractive. They should understand your property’s characteristics, listen to your ideas, recommend practical solutions and create an outdoor space that works for your lifestyle and budget.
If you are considering a garden transformation, this guide explains what to look for and how Mirage Landscapes can help you make informed decisions about your landscaping project.
1. Understand What You Want from Your Garden
Before contacting a landscaping professional, spend some time considering what you want to achieve.
Every garden has different requirements. A small urban garden may need clever space-saving solutions, while a larger property could benefit from planting schemes, patios, lawns, pathways and dedicated outdoor living areas.
Start by making a simple list of your priorities, such as:
- Creating a low-maintenance garden
- Installing a new patio or seating area
- Improving the lawn
- Adding flower beds and planting
- Creating privacy with plants or screening
- Installing pathways
- Improving drainage
- Designing an outdoor entertaining area
- Making the garden more wildlife-friendly
- Redesigning an outdated garden
Having a clear idea of your priorities makes it easier to explain your expectations to a professional.
You do not necessarily need a complete design before making an enquiry. An experienced gardener or landscaper can help turn your ideas into a practical plan.
2. Look for Relevant Landscaping Experience
Not every gardening professional provides the same services. Some focus primarily on garden maintenance, while others specialise in landscaping, garden design, planting, paving, fencing or larger garden transformations.
If you are planning significant changes, look for a landscape gardener Southport with experience relevant to the type of work you require.
Ask potential contractors:
- How long have you been providing landscaping services?
- What types of projects do you normally undertake?
- Have you completed gardens similar to mine?
- Can you show examples of previous work?
- Do you provide design and planting advice?
- Which aspects of the project do you handle directly?
Previous experience can give you a better understanding of the professional’s capabilities and approach.
For a major project, experience is particularly valuable because landscaping can involve much more than planting flowers. Ground preparation, drainage, levels, materials, access and long-term maintenance can all influence the final result.
3. Check Their Previous Work
A portfolio can tell you a great deal about a landscaping professional.
Look for completed projects that demonstrate variety, attention to detail and good workmanship. Pay attention not only to how attractive the gardens look, but also to how practical the designs appear.
For example, consider whether:
- The pathways appear easy to use
- Seating areas are appropriately positioned
- Planting complements the property
- Materials work well together
- The garden has clearly defined areas
- Plants appear suitable for their surroundings
- The finished design looks manageable to maintain
If possible, ask whether you can see photographs of completed projects that are similar to your own garden.
This is often more useful than choosing someone based solely on a short online description.
4. Consider Their Approach to Garden Design
Good landscaping should combine appearance with functionality.
A beautiful garden that requires excessive maintenance may not be suitable for a busy household. Similarly, a garden designed entirely around low maintenance may not provide the visual character or outdoor living space you want.
A professional should consider factors such as:
- The size and shape of the garden
- Sunlight and shade
- Soil conditions
- Existing trees and plants
- Drainage
- Privacy
- How the garden will be used
- Children or pets
- Available maintenance time
- Your preferred style
- Your budget
A thoughtful design should also consider how the garden will develop over time. Plants grow, trees mature and materials weather. A good plan therefore looks beyond the first few months after installation.
5. Ask About Materials and Plants
The materials and plants used in your garden can influence both its appearance and long-term maintenance.
Ask your prospective landscaper why particular materials or plants have been recommended rather than simply accepting the cheapest or most fashionable option.
For planting, consider:
- Seasonal interest
- Mature plant size
- Soil requirements
- Water requirements
- Pollinator value
- Maintenance requirements
- Compatibility with surrounding plants
- Year-round structure
For hard landscaping, discuss options for patios, paths, walls, edging and other features.
The right choices should complement your property while remaining practical for everyday use.
6. Look at Current Garden Trends
Garden design is continually evolving, and 2026 is seeing a particularly strong emphasis on sustainability, climate resilience and biodiversity.
The Royal Horticultural Society’s 2026 gardening predictions identify climate change as a major influence on gardening, with greater emphasis on plant diversity and gardens that can cope with changing weather conditions.
Current trends include:
- Climate-resilient planting: Choosing plants that can cope with changing weather patterns.
- Wildlife-friendly gardens: Incorporating plants and features that support pollinators and other wildlife.
- Low-maintenance landscaping: Creating attractive gardens that do not require constant upkeep.
- Sustainable gardening: Using resources thoughtfully and reducing unnecessary waste.
- Outdoor living: Designing gardens as extensions of the home’s living space.
- Edible gardening: Growing herbs, vegetables and fruit even where space is limited.
- Naturalistic planting: Combining different heights, textures and plant forms for a more relaxed appearance.
The RHS has also highlighted the popularity of compact edible gardening, including tabletop vegetables, reflecting how gardeners are finding ways to grow food even where outdoor space is limited.
A good landscaper should be able to discuss trends without allowing fashion to dictate every decision. The best garden is one that suits your property and lifestyle first.
7. Prioritise Sustainable Landscaping
Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in modern garden design.
A professional may be able to suggest ways to reduce water use, encourage biodiversity and create a garden that is more resilient to changing weather.
Potential options include:
- Choosing appropriate drought-tolerant plants
- Grouping plants according to their water requirements
- Adding wildlife-friendly planting
- Using permeable surfaces where appropriate
- Incorporating water collection
- Reusing suitable existing materials
- Reducing unnecessary lawn areas
- Using peat-free growing products where appropriate
Current UK gardening trends show a clear movement towards climate-resilient planting, wildlife-friendly gardens and sustainable landscaping.
This does not mean every garden needs to look naturalistic or informal. Sustainable design can work with contemporary, traditional and minimalist styles.
8. Get a Clear and Detailed Quote
Cost is naturally an important consideration when choosing a landscaping professional.
However, comparing quotes based only on the final price can be misleading.
A cheaper quote may not include the same materials, preparation work, waste removal or finishing details as a more comprehensive quotation.
Before agreeing to a project, make sure the quote explains:
- Labour costs
- Materials
- Plant costs
- Ground preparation
- Waste removal
- Any required excavation
- Additional features
- Estimated timescale
- Payment schedule
- What is included and excluded
If something is unclear, ask for clarification before work begins.
A professional quotation should make it easier for you to understand exactly what you are paying for.
9. Check Reviews and Reputation
Online reviews can provide useful insight into a company’s communication, reliability and workmanship.
However, do not rely on star ratings alone. Read the actual comments and look for recurring themes.
Positive signs include comments about:
- Professional communication
- Punctuality
- Quality workmanship
- Clean and tidy work
- Meeting agreed expectations
- Good project management
- Helpful advice
You can also ask whether the landscaper can provide references or examples of previous projects.
Remember that reviews should be one part of your decision rather than the only deciding factor.
10. Make Communication a Priority
Communication is often overlooked when choosing a contractor, but it can have a major impact on your experience.
During the initial consultation, consider whether the professional listens carefully to your requirements and explains their recommendations clearly.
A good landscaping professional should be willing to discuss your ideas while also pointing out potential practical issues.
For example, they might explain that a particular plant is unsuitable for a shaded area or that a certain material could require more maintenance than another option.
That kind of honest advice can help prevent expensive mistakes.
11. Think About Long-Term Maintenance
A garden is not finished when the landscaping team leaves.
Plants continue growing, lawns require care and hard landscaping needs occasional cleaning and maintenance.
Before finalising your design, ask:
- How much maintenance will the garden require?
- Which plants will need regular pruning?
- How quickly will plants mature?
- Will the lawn require frequent care?
- How should new plants be established?
- Are there seasonal maintenance requirements?
If you have limited time, tell your landscaper from the beginning. They can then recommend a design that balances appearance with practicality.
12. Choose a Professional That Understands Your Goals
Ultimately, the best landscape gardener Southport is not necessarily the cheapest or the company with the largest portfolio.
It is the professional who understands your requirements and can provide a realistic plan for achieving them.
Look for a combination of:
- Relevant experience
- Quality workmanship
- Clear communication
- Transparent pricing
- Suitable materials and plants
- Strong attention to detail
- Sustainable design awareness
- Reliable project management
- Good understanding of garden maintenance
